What this article shows

Two-or-more-person households in Yokohama have average annual income of about ¥9.55 million, with about ¥11.50 million for households headed by people in their 50s and ¥11.20 million for those in their 60s. These are household—not individual salary—figures, combining income from Tokyo commuters, people working in Yokohama, dual-income couples, pensions, and assets.

Average, all ages About ¥9.55m Annual income
Ages 50–59 About ¥11.50m Annual income
Ages 60–69 About ¥11.20m Annual income

Households in their 50s and 60s are above ¥11 million, falling to about ¥6.94 million in the 70s

Among the published age groups, households headed by people aged 50–59 have annual income of ¥11.503 million and those aged 60–69 ¥11.198 million, very similar levels. For ages 70–79, the figure drops to ¥6.944 million, about ¥4.56 million below the 50s.

Figures for ages 30–49 were not published because of sample limitations and other constraints. It is therefore not possible to infer a typical income level for younger households by working backward from the overall average of ¥9.552 million.

Tokyo commuters, large local employers, and long-established suburban homeowners all sit inside the same average

Reading the regional background

Aoba, Tsuzuki, and Kohoku wards include many households that commute to central Tokyo via the Tokyu Den-en-toshi and Toyoko lines. Yokohama Station and Minato Mirai host employers such as Nissan Motor and Fujifilm Business Innovation, while Shin-Yokohama also has corporate facilities. Household income therefore includes both people who earn their income in Tokyo and those who work inside Yokohama.

Meanwhile, wards such as Konan, Asahi, Sakae, and Izumi have many middle-aged and older owner-occupier households that have lived there for years. Age, occupation, and commuting destination differ greatly across Yokohama's 18 wards. High income among households in their 50s and 60s may reflect not only dual salaries but also peak-career earnings, pensions, business or asset income, and one-off receipts.

How to read these figures

Important notes

These statistics cover annual income for two-or-more-person households. Single-person households are excluded, and annual income may include not only wages but also pensions, business income, dividends, retirement payments, and other sources. It is therefore not a direct measure of salaries among working-age individuals.

City-level data by age are also affected by sample-size constraints, which is why some age groups are not published. For Yokohama, it is appropriate to focus on the overall average and the age-group figures that are actually available.

Summary: ¥9.55 million is a mixed citywide average, not the income of a typical Yokohama household

Key takeaway

Household income in Yokohama is high in the 50s and 60s, but the averages combine Tokyo commuters, people working locally, and middle-aged and older suburban households. The ¥9.55 million average should not be treated as the lived experience of every Yokohama household; age and living area need to be considered separately.

  • Overall average: about ¥9.55 million
  • 50s: about ¥11.50 million; 60s: about ¥11.20 million
  • 70s: about ¥6.94 million
  • Because ages 30–49 are not published, a continuous comparison for younger and middle-aged households is not possible
