Yokohama has annual income of about ¥9.55 million for households with two or more members, average financial assets of about ¥24.75 million, and taxable income of ¥4.20 million per taxpayer. The figures are high, but they come from statistics covering different populations—prefectural wage earners, households, and taxpayers—so they cannot simply be added together to create a single "typical household." This article looks at Yokohama household finances from three separate angles.
Key economic indicators for Yokohama
| Indicator | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Annual income, households with 2+ members (2019) | ¥9.552 million | National Survey of Family Income, Consumption and Wealth |
| Average financial assets | ¥24.749 million | National Survey of Family Income, Consumption and Wealth |
| Taxable income per taxpayer (2023) | ¥4.20 million | Municipal taxation statistics |
| Scheduled monthly wage (Kanagawa, 2023) | ¥384,100 | Basic Survey on Wage Structure |
| Daytime/nighttime population ratio | 92.5% (nighttime > daytime) | 2020 Population Census |
Income, assets, and taxable income each show a different side of household finances
Annual income of ¥9.552 million is measured at the household level for households with two or more members. Financial assets of ¥24.749 million are an average balance for the same broad household category. Taxable income of ¥4.20 million is measured per taxpayer. Kanagawa's scheduled monthly wage of ¥384,100 is a workplace-based average for employees.
The reference years also differ—2019, 2020, and 2023. These indicators should not be combined directly into a single household's monthly budget. They are better used as complementary measures of income flow, accumulated assets, and resident income in the area.
Tokyo commuting, local employment, and long-term homeowners create multiple household patterns
Aoba, Tsuzuki, and Kohoku have many dual-income households commuting to Tokyo, while Yokohama Station and Minato Mirai provide higher-value local employment, including major corporate operations such as Nissan. At the same time, wards such as Konan, Asahi, Sakae, and Izumi include many long-term homeowners and older households. Household finances therefore vary substantially across Yokohama's 18 wards.
A daytime/nighttime population ratio of 92.5% shows the city's dependence on employment outside Yokohama, while a daytime population of roughly 3.5 million also demonstrates the scale of jobs within the city itself. Yokohama is both a residential city where many people earn in Tokyo and a major city with its own employment base.
How to read these figures
A spending table for a hypothetical dual-income household in its 40s appeared in an earlier version of the article, but it combined arbitrary assumptions for mortgage payments, education costs, and savings rather than published statistics, so it has been removed. Household income and financial assets are averages and do not show medians, debt, or real-estate holdings.
Summary: Yokohama scores highly, but there is no single "typical" household
Yokohama is relatively high on income, financial assets, and taxable income, but each number averages households with very different circumstances across 18 wards. Tokyo commuting, local employment, age, and whether a household owns or rents all affect the lived experience. The definitions of each indicator are more useful than an arbitrary model of a "typical household."
