What this article shows

Households with two or more members in Yokohama hold an average of about ¥24.75 million in financial assets, while households headed by people in their 70s average about ¥29.83 million. But the figures do not rise smoothly with age: the average is about ¥21.07 million in the 50s and about ¥18.34 million in the 60s. Rather than treating the average as the balance of a “standard household,” we interpret it in light of asset distribution and Yokohama's household composition.

Are Yokohama's household financial assets high compared with other cities?

CityAverage financial assets (¥1,000)
Chiba City38,877 (highest in Kanto)
Tokyo special wards22,679
Yokohama24,749
Saitama City20,089
Kawasaki18,626
Sagamihara17,140 (lowest in Kanto)

The average is ¥24.75 million, but the age curve is not smooth

Households headed by people aged 50–59 average ¥21.07 million, those aged 60–69 average ¥18.34 million, and those aged 70–79 average ¥29.83 million. The 70s figure is about ¥11.49 million higher than the 60s figure, so this is not a simple pattern of steadily accumulated assets with age.

In the six-city comparison, Yokohama is at a relatively high level, behind Chiba City. However, financial assets are an indicator whose mean can be pulled upward by a relatively small number of households with very large holdings. Liabilities and real estate are not included in this financial-asset balance.

Long-term homeowners and working households in the home-buying stage coexist in Yokohama

Reading the regional background

Across its 18 wards, Yokohama includes Tokyo-commuting households in Aoba, Tsuzuki, and Kohoku; households working around Minato Mirai and Shin-Yokohama; and older households that have lived in suburban residential areas since Japan's high-growth era. The high balance among households in their 70s may include long-term homeowners who have completed decades of asset accumulation as well as households that have already received retirement payments.

Meanwhile, households in their 50s and 60s may still face mortgage repayments, education costs, or care for aging parents. This table alone cannot identify the causes of spending, however. Yokohama's asset figures are best understood as averages that mix different household life stages and regional characteristics.

How to read these figures

Important notes

These asset statistics are averages and do not directly show medians or the distribution of assets. They cover households with two or more members, and real estate assets outside financial assets may not be included.

The article is organized primarily around figures from published statistics. Numerical values directly observable in the statistical tables should be distinguished from interpretations of background factors.

Summary: Do not use Yokohama's ¥24.75 million average as a savings target

Key takeaway

Average financial assets in Yokohama are about ¥24.75 million, but age-specific figures are irregular and the distribution is likely highly skewed. Household comparisons should consider not only the mean but also the median, liabilities, real estate, and the age of the household.

  • All-age average: about ¥24.75 million
  • 50s: about ¥21.07 million; 60s: about ¥18.34 million
  • 70s: about ¥29.83 million
  • Financial assets alone do not reveal net worth or the position of a typical household
