Highest income, but only fifth among the six cities in financial assets

Financial assets are about ¥6.60 million in the 30s, ¥9.25 million in the 40s, ¥33.92 million in the 50s, ¥22.16 million in the 60s, and ¥19.21 million in the 70s. After a large jump in the 50s, the figures fall again, so this is not a smooth age progression.

The all-age average is ¥18.626 million, ¥4.053 million less than the ¥22.679 million average in Tokyo's 23 wards. High current income and high current financial-asset holdings do not necessarily rank the same way.

Redevelopment in areas such as Musashi-Kosugi has attracted high-income dual-income households in their 30s and 40s. Even when income is high because of Tokyo-based jobs or high-value local employment at firms such as Fujitsu and NEC, financial-asset balances may remain lower if households have recently purchased homes, are repaying mortgages, or are paying childcare and education costs.

Kawasaki also differs from Tokyo's 23 wards and Yokohama in the depth of its older household population. In a city with a high share of younger working households, it is natural for income—the flow—to rise first and assets—the stock—to accumulate later.
